Specialty

Italian Genealogy Research

✦

Italian-American family research is my deepest specialty. My own family is from Piemonte, a less common origin among Italian-Americans, where southern Italian families predominate, which has given me experience across a broader range of Italian regional archives. I navigate the Italian civil registration system (stato civile), which began in most provinces in the 1860s, as well as earlier Catholic parish records dating to the 1600s.

My research extends to the Antenati database, comune archives, diocesan repositories, and LDS microfilm collections, giving me access to records that most online databases never touch.

My own roots are in Piemonte, which gives me particular familiarity with northern Italian records, but my research extends across the full peninsula. For families from Calabria, Campania, Sicily, Piemonte, Lombardia, and beyond, I can often trace lineages back five, six, or more generations beyond what U.S. records alone would allow.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the family's origin and the records that survive. For American families with roots in colonial New England, research sometimes reaches the 1600s. For Italian families, civil records begin in the early 1800s and parish records can go back to the 1600s or earlier. I always tell clients honestly what's realistically achievable for their specific lineage.

Negative results are still documented results. If a record doesn't exist or hasn't survived, I'll tell you that, along with an explanation of what I searched and what alternative approaches might be possible. You pay for the research, not a guaranteed outcome.

The more you can share, the better: names, approximate birth years, last known locations, and any documents you already have. But even if you're starting from almost nothing, I can work with a single name and a rough generation.

A Starter Research engagement is typically completed within one to two weeks. Standard packages run two to four weeks. Premium and custom projects may take four to eight weeks depending on complexity and record availability.
